Gerard Rudy and Norvelle Goff-Rudy

Drs. Gerard Rudy and Norvelle Goff-Rudy are physicians serving with the Medical Program of the Moravian Church in Honduras. Norvelle is the director of the Medical Program, which includes a hospital in Ahuas, a clinic in Cauquira, public health programs directed from those two sites and medical dispensaries Ocotales and San Jose de la Punta, Colon. Gerard is medical director of the hospital in Ahuas.

The Goff-Rudys met in 1990 when Gerard was a volunteer in Ahuas and Norvelle was a staff physician. Though he returned to the States and residency, their friendship continued to grow through letters, visits, ham radio communication, and prayer. A year later, they received the blessing of Norvelle’s parents and were engaged to be married. Gerard and Norvelle exchanged vows in Chicago on December 28, 1991.

Norvelle trained in nursing at Thaeler Memorial Moravian Hospital in Bilwaskarma, Nicaragua. Later, she studied medicine at the National Autonomous University of Honduras and public health at Boston University in the United States. She became part of the medical team in Ahuas in 1988 and was appointed director of the medical program in 1994. She is the daughter of Bishop and Mrs. Stanley Goff.

Gerard grew up in Michigan and Illinois. He attended the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, receiving undergraduate, public health, and medical degrees. Dr. Rudy completed a residency in family medicine at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. He began service in Central America in 1993. Gerard enjoys the support of his parents and siblings.

Norvelle and Gerard are the parents of a son, Peter, born in 1997. He enjoys mechanical things and aspires to be a pilot like Norvelle’s cousin George Goff (flying for Alas de Socorro out of Ahuas). He is a budding trilingualist and loves to have people read to him.
