Board of World Mission Update on Hurricane Florence
As of Thursday, September 13, 2018 Hurricane Florence is poised to make landfall near Wilmington, NC as a category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of 105 miles per hour and heavy rains. Complicating matters is that the storm is moving very slowly only magnifying the effects of the wind and rain. Florence is looking to be a catastrophic storm and we are asking your prayers for all those who are being affected, those who evacuated and are now in a waiting game to see when they can return home to assess the damage, and the first responders and utility workers who will soon begin the rebuilding process.
We specifically wish to lift up our Moravian brothers and sisters of the Covenant Moravian Church in located in Wilmington, NC not far from where Florence is due to come ashore. These folks will be the first to be affected by the storm and feel its full impact.
Inland flooding will also be a significant burden for those in the major metropolitan areas where we have Moravian congregations such as Raleigh, Durham, Charlotte, Greensboro, Winston-Salem and the communities that surround these cities. We have 46 congregations in North Carolina in addition to a number of fellowships in both North and South Carolina and we ask that you keep all of these people in your prayers as well.
Since Moravian Disaster Response does not have first responder capabilities we are allowing those who do to first go in and bring aid, comfort, and take assessments of where help is most needed. We have every reason to believe that there will be a need for volunteer teams to help with the clean-up and rebuilding process. The Board of World Mission will continue to monitor conditions in North and South Carolina and communicate a plan of action as a path forward is discerned with our ecumenical partners. We may communicate some opportunities to engage through partner organizations in a coordinated response in the early stages of the recovery.
We would invite your support for Moravian Disaster Response (MDR) funding as we respond to the needs of not only this storm but the on-going needs in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Port Arthur, TX from last year’s storms and the potential for hurricanes and other disasters yet to come this year. Designating your gift to “MDR” allows us to use your donation in the place where it is most needed at the moment.
