Updates for Texas & St. Johns
Moravian Disaster Response, is an outreach of the Board of World Mission that offers assistance in areas of need that have experienced devastation from circumstances beyond people’s control such as hurricanes, earthquakes, tornados, etc. There are two locales that continue to offer opportunities to serve through the Board of World Mission, Port Arthur, Texas and on the island of St. John.
The recovery efforts in Port Arthur are being coordinated by Aaron Van Der Linden of Wisconsin on behalf of the BWM as well as Mark Sebek of the Unity of the Brethren in Texas. Aaron will be in Port Arthur until early March at which time Mark will continue with the coordination efforts. The UB Church building is nearing completion of its rehabilitation. Homes within the region will be the focus of the ongoing work. Volunteers are provided accommodations that include meals, lodging, and shower and laundry facilities at no charge to the volunteer. The volunteers provide their own transportation. The necessary tools are on site to carry out the construction.
Rev. Eulencine Christopher, Minister of Christian Education of the Moravian Church in the Virgin Islands Conference, is providing leadership for the work in St. John. Rev. Christopher extended an invitation to the Board of World Mission to please send groups of people to assist with the recovery efforts following a series of severe weather in the fall of 2107 that destroyed buildings. At this writing an initial team is on site at the Emmaus Moravian Church. They have carried tools and equipment to enable them to do the work of removing building materials and debris. Following this visit a team of engineers will make assessments with regard to structural stability of the Church structure. Please watch for a report from the BWM regarding this effort and the ways in which volunteers can respond. The amount of recovery work to be accomplished is extensive and will require ongoing support.
If you or you and a group of people would like to assist at either site please contact Jill Kolodziej, Director of Antioch, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 920.256.9472.
