Likewise Ministries began as the HIV/AIDS outreach of the Moravian Board of World Mission in North America. It is a responses to the command in Luke 10:36-37 to “Go and do likewise”—living out the Gospel as we care for and love those affected by HIV/AIDS and raise awareness among our members about the local and global consequences of this devastating disease, as well as the potential for the church to contribute positively to its prevention and management. Likewise Ministries also seeks to walk beside our global partner provinces of the Unity of the World Wide Moravian Church in their efforts to provide hope, dignity and services to families and communities affected by the AIDS pandemic.
Who We Are
Likewise Ministries is a program authorized by the Board of Directors of the Board of World Mission. The Likewise Ministries Committee consists of members from the North American Moravian Church with a wide range of experience in public health and HIV/AIDS, cross-cultural ministries, administration, research, and education. We welcome others who might be interested in serving with us in this meaningful ministry.
Likewise Initiatives with HIV and AIDS
Likewise is building relationships with our partner provinces to address the issues of HIV and AIDS around the issues of:
- education of clergy, lay leaders and congregations regarding HIV/AIDS, as well as confronting stigmas associated with this disease,
- prevention strategies
- prevention of mother-to-child transmission, and
- care of those with HIV/AIDS, including physical, emotional, and spiritual care and the provision of treatment.
care of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC)
Current HIV and AIDS efforts include:
- payment for transport for HIV patients from the clinic in Ahuas, Honduras to go to Puerto Lempira to receive their medications and tests for monitoring treatment;
- evaluation of a broad-based community education program that is being proposed out of Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua.
Pursing partnering with the Guyana Moravian Church to do preventive teaching for HIV and AIDS and other health concerns
In addition Likewise has moved into the area of community strengthening, supporting women and vulnerable children in the area of Mwanza, Tanzania through the HUKWAFA program (Huduma kwa Watoto na Familia—Serving Children and Family). This program began in partnership with the BWM in 2009, with funds designated specifically to help alleviate hunger in Africa. A total of 250 children were registered into the program in the villages of Magu and Ginininga. They were provided with periodic food distributions, materials necessary to continue their schooling, and helped through the registration process to get their health cards with the government.
More recently the HUKWAFA board and project manager Bahati Andrew have moved into a program of community strengthening, forming several groups of women within the two villages to help each other develop small businesses and other income-generating projects. The groups have developed a simple savings and lending model through which members can obtain a loan to invest in a business venture. As the member repays the loan, others can benefit from these revolving funds. The goal is to seek out projects that will give long-term solutions for the individuals and their families. A great benefit that is already seen from this program is the solidarity and increased sense of sharing that is born and grows among group members.
Congregational Educational Forums
Members of Likewise Ministries are available to congregations to coordinate education and resources when possible. Please contact the BWM offices or staff directly with specific needs.
Local Ministry Opportunities
Seek out your local HIV/AIDS Networks and consider volunteering with them. This is an excellent way to learn more about the related issues and to put a “face” on the problem.
